With an average elevation of 3,256 feet, Lubbock is located in northwest Texas, at the center of the South Plains. It was founded in 1876 and takes its name from Thomas S. Lubbock, a former Texas Ranger. Lubbock's economy relies on agriculture as well as on a variety of manufacturing facilities located within the region. Today the city is most well known as being the home of Texas Tech University.
