The District on France Condominium Tower

The District on France Condominium Tower
Centennial Lakes Condominium Tower

Structure in General

high-rise building
unbuilt [cancelled]

residential condominium

  • This tower was proposed for the site previously occupied by the shuttered Centennial Lakes Movie Theater.
  • It would have overlooked the northernmost lake in the three-block long Centennial Lakes chain.
  • Originally proposed at up to 25 floors, developers reduced the floor count to 18 after meetings with Edina city planners.
  • The Edina City Council approved a variance to the Centennial Lakes Master Plan on December 6, 2005. It would have allowed up to 17 floors overground.
  • The initial scheme called for a tower of 18 floors, rising 215 feet to the main roof, not including decorative spires.
  • At the time it was proposed, it would have become Edina's tallest primarily residential building. Though taller, the The Westin Edina Galleria & Residences includes a large hotel component on the lower floors.
  • In December 2006, a Hennepin County District Judge ruled that the Edina City Council overstepped its statutory bounds by circumventing the Edina Zoning Board of Appeals when it granted a 168.5 foot height variance needed for this tower.
  • Given the court ruling, the developers decided to forgo building a high-rise on this site. A mix of uses, including retail is planned.
  • In light of significant citizen opposition, the City Council deferred giving their final approval to construction of this tower on April 18, 2006. Instead, final approval was granted on May 16, 2006.
