  • The Weisman Art Museum is positioned prominently at the south side of Washington Avenue, the entrance to the University of Minnesota's East Bank Campus.
  • It is named for Frederick R. Weisman, a noted Minneapolis philantropist.
  • This was Gehry's first major project to feature his now trademark organic stainless steel facade, celebrated with great acclaim in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
  • The stainless steel has an interesting compliment in the McNamara Alumni Center, which is clad in copper and granite and was completed seven years later at the eastern edge of the East Bank campus.
  • The stainless steel facade is echoed in two pedestrian bridges over Washington Avenue, connecting Coffman Memorial Union with Northrop Mall, just to the east.
  • The architects were recognized with a Progressive Architecture Award in 1992 and an Honor Award from the California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1994.
  • The museum was founded in 1934 as the teaching museum for the University of Minnesota. The museum's major strengths are in American modernism, ceramics, Mimbres pottery, and Korean furniture.
  • The main entrance is from the sidewalk connecting Coffman Union to the pedestrian walkway on the upper deck of the Washington Avenue bridge.
  • The lowest level is a parking garage, with access from East River Road.
  • An expansion to the east, also designed by Frank Gehry, began in late 2009.
