Construction of the hotel originally began using light-pink bricks. Due to public displeasure what progress had been made was stopped and it was re-built, using the bricks of its current colour.
The Hotel Grand Chancellor is home to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in the attached state-of-the-art Federation Concert Hall. The cylindrical shape of the Hall creates superb acoustics and replicates an old building once part of the City's historical 'Gasworks' area.
