Facts

  • Maarten van Rossem bought the house in 1538 after the previous owner Karel van Gelre (Duke of Gelre) died. He extended the building in 1546 and that is how we see the building today.
  • The building is the only remaining part of the old city hall buildings which stood here before the current city hall from 1968
  • Some extensions and renovations were made in 1898. The Building was severely damaged during the second World War, but was restored to its former glory
  • The Duivelshuis was converted to city hall in 1830 and is (part of) the city hall since then
  • The name Duivelshuis refers to the saters which can be found on the wall in the facade of the building (Duivel means Demon in English).
