Facts

  • Originally contained 4 floors of retail space at the base, 14 floors of office space and 2 mechanical elevator floors recessed to the back of the building. It was one of Detroit’s first major mixed use projects.
  • The building was named for one of Detroit's wealthiest citizens at the turn-of-the-century who died in 1900.
  • The facade was drastically changed in 1959. All decorative cornices were removed and replaced with a 'modern' top.
  • The building was renovated by the Roxbury Group from spring 2013 to December 2014, transforming the building into the 136-room Aloft Hotel at the David Whitney on floors three through nine, and 105 apartments on floors ten through thirteen.
