Facts

  • Located next to the Brooklyn Bridge in downtown Manhattan, the building owes its great height to a deal made with the builders of the adjacent Murray Bergtraum High School.
  • As the high school used only a portion of the building rights for the plot, they agreed to transfer the rest to the New York Telephone Company for a switching station tower. As a payback, New York Telephone paid the bonds that were used to finance the school building.
  • The original facade, reviled by architecture critics, consisted of a white limestone slab with narrow three-foot-wide vertical windows.
  • A glassy new makeover by Cook + Fox Architects, LLP was proposed in 2008, but was placed on hold during the Great Recession.
  • In 2016-2018 the building finally received its glassy new facade. The new facade not only allows for panoramic views of the city, but it also reveals the building's distinctive x-shaped support columns.
