The centerpiece of Chicago's first World's Fair, the 1893 Columbian Exposition, this domed structure stood at the end of the Court of Honor in front of an artificial lagoon. Its position in the fair was equivalent to that occupied by the Tour Eiffel in the 1889 World's Fair in Paris.
